Brett Brown will not coach Australia’s men’s basketball team at the Tokyo Olympics next year, despite signing on to lead the Boomers in November last year.
- Brett Brown said difficulties travelling internationally with his family during the pandemic contributed to his decision
- He was appointed to the role of Australian Boomers head coach for Tokyo Olympics in November 2019
- Both the Australian Boomers and Australian Opals have already qualified for the Tokyo Olympics
Brown told Basketball Australia he would not be able to commit to the team after being fired by NBA team the Philadelphia 76ers.
“The uncertainties around the direction of my professional future unfortunately mean that I cannot commit to the time and preparation that this job deserves and requires,” he said.
Brown, who coached Australian superstar Ben Simmons in Philadelphia this season, said the difficulties of travelling with his family during the COVID-19 pandemic also contributed to his decision.
The 59-year-old signed on to coach the team less than 11 months ago, when the Olympics were still set to take place in 2020, and has not led the team in a game or a camp yet.
“It is important for me to give Basketball Australia, the [new] coach and players the necessary time for a full and thorough Olympic Games preparation in the event that the Games do proceed,” he said.
“This was a difficult decision which did not come easy. My past experiences with the current Boomer players are among my most memorable as a coach. To coach the Boomers was a privilege and an honour.
“I will work closely with Basketball Australia in any way that I can to ensure a smooth and successful transition.”
Basketball Australia chief executive Jerril Rechter said the governing body was “naturally disappointed … but we fully understand Brett’s situation, and appreciate his candidness when informing us of the decision”.
“The COVID-19 pandemic is creating a challenging environment for all sports in which to operate,” Rechter said.
“The Tokyo Olympics is an important event for Basketball Australia and our male athletes, as collectively we believe the Boomers have an excellent opportunity to claim their first-ever Olympic medal.
“Basketball Australia will commence recruitment for this position in the coming period, with details of the process to be released in due course.”
