You will be hard-pressed to find a more significant high school football rivalry game in Southern Nevada.

The Henderson Bowl tonight between host Basic and Green Valley has everything: History and tradition, closely contested games, and a trophy that is stored with the winning program until they meet again next season.

At Basic’s practices this week, an empty table was awkwardly placed behind the end zone. In seasons when Basic has possession of the trophy, it would sit on the table for practice, a friendly reminder of what’s at stake. But Green Valley won last season.

The rivalry is nearly 30 years old — starting when Green Valley in 1991 became Henderson’s second high school — and the trophy has been part of many celebratory photos. For players at both schools, a win this evening would rank at the top of their high school achievements.

Green Valley leads to the all-time series 17-9.

This year’s game, which is also the regular season finale, has extra meaning: The losing team likely will miss the playoffs.

It’s not the lone game of interest as the season shifts into a November, a time when Friday nights mostly feature one team advancing to another round of the postseason and the other team turning in their gear to signal the end of the season.

The Mountain Region playoffs begin tonight with Desert Pines, the Northeast League’s No. 2 seed, hosting Centennial in a game many expect to come down to the end. Canyon Springs, the Northeast League champion, takes on Palo Verde; Northwest League champion (and regional favorite) Arbor View opens against Mojave; and Faith Lutheran takes on Legacy.

In the class 3A, Moapa Valley hosts Cheyenne, and Boulder City travels to Pahrump Valley in state quarterfinal games. Pahrump is playing for its first playoff victory since 1978.
